Ein guter Grund, nach Kanada auszuwandern? Sophie Milman. Sehr schön anzuhören und sehr schön anzusehen. Die Lady singt Jazz so, wie es den zwitschernden Starlets niemals gelingen wird. Sophie Milman ist eine Sensation, wird die Jazzwelt überrollen wie einst Scarlett Johansson die Filmwelt. Ihre Band spielt sehr ordentlich, die Songs sind Standards, famos vorgetragen. Ein bemerkenswertes Debüt, auf das man hierzulande zwei Jahre warten musste. Sobald ich mein Holzfällerhemd gefunden habe, bin ich bereit - fürs Auswandern nach Kanada

Nachdem The Once ihr Debüt im August 2009 veröffentlicht hatten, wuchs die Nachfrage nach der Indie-Folk Gruppe schnell an. Es ist beeindruckend wie viele Highlights es bis jetzt schon in ihrer jungen Karriere gab. Als sie beim legendären Lunenburg Folk-Festival gespielt hatten, hinterließ ein anonymer Spender einen Scheck mit 5.000 US-$ für ihre Produktion und unbesehen wurden sie vom 'National Radio CBC' für die Sendung 'The Vinyl Café' gebucht.
Darüber hinaus kam die Indie-Wave Sängerin Amelia Curran (Six Shooter Records/Warner) auf die Band zu, weil sie einen ihrer eigenen Songs gemeinsam mit The Once aufnehmen und bei ihrer eigenen Veröffentlichung im Herbst 2009 aufführen wollte. 2010 werden The Once auf dem 'The Goderich Roots Festival', der 'Folk Alliance' in Memphis auftreten und sie werden an den JUNO Festivitäten in St. John's teilnehmen.

Mit der 1984 erstamlig veröffentlichten 'Stealing Fire' verlieh Bruce Cockburn seiner Musik und seinen Texten mehr Nachdruck, als jemals zuvor. 1983 reiste er erstmals nach Zentral-Amerika in Verbindung mit der internationalen Entwicklungshilfe OXFAM und besuchte im Süden Mexikos ein Flüchtlingslager, das kurz zuvor vom US-Militär bombardiert wurde. Diese schlimme Erfahrung schrieb er in 'If I Had A Rocket Launcher' nieder. Mit diesem Song war er sehr erfolgreich und war regelmäßig im Radio und auf MTV zu sehen und zu hören. Zudem enthält dieses Album die kritischsten politschen Songs, die Cockburn jemals geschrieben hat. Außerdem sind viele romantische Klassiker Cockburns auf diesem Album versammelt. Von “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” bihin zu “Making Contact”, der Schrei nach Hilfe oder die Motivation zum Handeln... Cockburns Poesie verdient Beifall. Seit seiner Veröffentlichung gilt dieses Werk als eines der fesselnsten Alben eines Singer/Songwriters in den 1980ern. Über 20 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung ist der Einfluss des Albums unvermindert.

Seitdem hat ihre Musik einen Stammplatz an der Spitze von Kanadas Roots Music Charts. Auch 'Water in the ground', das 2010 als Doppelpack mit dem 2004er Debüt 'Dark dream midnight' veröffentlicht wurde, bekam weltweit Höchstwertungen - in Deutschland machte Stereo die CDs zur Platte des Monats und viele anspruchsvolle Hörer entdeckten Catherine MacLellan für sich.
'Silhouette' heißt ihre neuester Output - Catherine MacLellan entwickelt sich hier, trotz ihres jungen Alters, zu einer nahezu vollkommenen Songwriterin. Elegant gewobene Songs, verstrickt mit ihren tiefempfundenen Texten und den eingängigen Melodien, die sie zu einer Ausnahme machen - im weiten Feld der Singer/Songwriter ihres Alters.

Mit Row upon row of the people they know, produzierten The Once einen atemberaubenden Nachfolger des selbstbetitelten Debüts. Der Titel ist aus einem Gedicht von George Murray, ein Gedicht das die Band so inspirierte, dass aus einem Gedicht ein Lied gezaubert wurde. Der Song -Song For Memory- stellt die ungeheure Kraft der Wörter dar und die Macht der Wörter, die Zeit und die Emotionen einfrieren zu lassen - um kleine Momente groß werden zu lassen und große Momente klein werden zu lassen.
Geraldine Hollet, die Leadsängerin der Band, mit einer Stimme so kräftig und eindrucksvoll, das man von ihr magisch angezogen wird. Phil Churchill und Andrew Dale ergänzen sich perfekt und bieten eine perfekte Zusammenarbeit von Stimme und Instrument(Gitarre, Mandoline, Geige und Bouzouki). Manchmal melancholisch, manchmal witzig, aber immer ergreifend, The Once ist schnell zum Stolz der neufundländlichen und kanadischen Folkmusik geworden.

Bruce Cockburns drittes Album ist eine unbestreitbar freudvolle Angelegenheit. „Es war eine Periode, als ich sehr unwissend und auf meiner eigenen inneren Suche war,“ erklärte Cockburn später. „Da war dieser ganze Optimismus, obwohl die Lieder an sich in verschiedene Richtungen gehen dürften. Wie die Verse zwischen politischer Chronik und persönlichen Gefühlen wechseln, variiert auch die großräumig-atmosphärische Musik zwischen starkem Rock - glänzend im Eröffnungstück 'If A Tree Falls' - und Balladenromantik ('Don't Feel Your Touch'). In the year leading up to the making of “Northwest Passage” Stan had toured extensively through Canada’s western provinces and he had soaked up the stories of the farmers and ex-pat Maritimers working the Alberta oil rigs. Those stories coalesced into many of the songs on this album. However certainly the best known song from the album is the title track Nothwest Passage which has gone on to become a Canadian anthem sung far and wide across the country.

Jane Bunnett & Maqueque are a force of nature. What started out five years ago as a project to record and mentor young brilliant Cuban female musicians, has become one of the top groups on the North American jazz scene. In the last year, they have played in major jazz festivals like Newport and Monterey, been featured on NPR’s programs Jazz Night in America and TIny Desk Concert, were nominated for a Grammy Award for their newest release, Oddara, and, most recently, were voted as one of the top ten jazz groups by the prestigious DownBeat magazine’s critics poll. Maqueque is led by veteran jazz icon Jane Bunnett, who has been a champion of Cuban jazz since before Buena Vista Social club made the sound a global phenomenon. This all female collective pours over an exuberant blend of Afro-Cuban, Jazz Fusion like the world has never seen before. Watching them is a masterclass in hard work, virtuosity and chemistry. The rich musical legacy of Ian and Sylvia continues to entertain millions of fans across the globe, and today singer songwriter, painter, and essayist Tom Russell announced a project honouring their music with new interpretations of classic songs with his May 19th release of “Play One More: The Songs Of Ian And Sylvia.”
Russell has recorded 35 highly acclaimed records, & published five books - including a book on his art and a book of his songs. Russell and Ian and Sylvia share similar values and cultural traditions - both deeply rooted in the depth of the song and story. Russell says, 'The music of Ian and Sylvia has stood up over a half of a century and is still recognized as deeply Canadian, it was an honour to pay tribute to them.”
In 1992, Ian and Sylvia were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the Juno Awards ceremony. In 1994 they were both made Members of the Order of Canada.
'In 2005 an extensive CBC poll determined Ian Tyson's song, recorded by Ian and Sylvia, 'Four Strong Winds,' to be the 'most essential' piece of Canadian music, and is no doubt the most popular Canadian song ever written. But don’t look for it on 'Play One More: The Songs of Ian and Sylvia.' Russell says, “I wanted to mine the deep, neglected, album tracks that I've listened to for over forty years. Works that I could never get out of my mind. Classic songwriting.”
Russell’s songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Doug Sahm, Nanci Griffith, K.D. Lang, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Ian Tyson, Iris Dement, Joe Ely, and a hundred others.
In 2015 Russell released a 52 track 'folk opera' on the West, The Rose of Roscrae, which was hailed as 'Maybe the most important Americana record of all time' by UK Folk, and 'The top Folk album of 2105,' by Mojo Magazine. It was included in top ten lists in three dozen publications, including The Los Angeles Times.

Joey Wright is a Juno-nominated songwriter, composer and performer from Toronto. Joey is well known for his lyrical and inspired guitar and mandolin playing. He is also highly regarded for his compositions and songwriting. Joey was one of the leading lights in the explosive bluegrass, old time and traditional country scene in Toronto in the late 90’s. Joey joined Jenny Whiteley’s band in 1999, and their first two albums (Jenny Whiteley & Hopetown) both won Juno awards for Best Roots Traditional Album. In 2005 Joey joined Sarah Harmer’s band to record the album I’m A Mountain which earned him a gold record. Dabei sind Sänger wie Tamara Silvera, Ruby Amanfu, Mary Gauthier und Brandon Robert Young, der Bassist Roberto Occhipinti sowie die Akkordeonistin Julie Wolf die Ehre.

Als SASS JORDAN 1988 mit ihrem Debütalbum „Tell Somebody“ auf der Bildfläche erschien, rauschte es gewaltig in der Musikszene. Denn die unglaubliche Rockröhre der zierlichen Blondine haute selbst den stärksten Rocker aus den Socken. Kein Wunder, daß die in England geborene Kanadierin im Folgejahr den JUNO Award für „The Most Promising Female Voice“ gewann und in den 90er Jahren vor allem in den USA und Kanada mit ihrem Barroom Hard Rock, der auch schon mal mit den Black Crowes und Rod Steward verglichen wird, zu einer der meist respektierten Sängerinnen und Songschreiberinnen aufstieg. Ihre Alben „Rats“ (inkl. Hitsingle „High Road Easy“) und „Racine“ sind nach wie vor Meilensteine des Hardrock, „Racine“ schaffte es in den USA bis auf Platz 2 der Billboard Charts und brachte die vier Hitsingles „I want To Believe“, „Goin Back Again“, „Make You a Believer“ und „You don’t Have To Remind Me“ hervor. Sie tourte mit Aerosmith und der Jeff Healey Band, in ihren Bands spielten alte Bekannte wie Rudi Sarzo, Stevie Salas und Brian Tichy.
Mit Joe Cocker als Duettpartner sang SASS JORDAN den Song „Trust In Me“, für den Soundtrack des Kinofilms „Bodyguard“ und als Songschreiberin war sie u.a. für Mariah Carey für die meisten Songs deren Alben „Butterfly“ und „The Adventures Of Mimi“ verantwortlich. Kein Wunder, daß sich Leute wie Dave Grohl von den Foo Fighters zu den Fans von SASS JORDAN zählen und die Dame, die in Kanada den Status eines Nationalheiligtums inne hat, bei ihren Konzerten zum gemeinsamen Musizieren mit auf die Bühne holen.
In Europa ist SASS JORDAN der große, kommerzielle Durchbruch nie ganz gelungen. Vielleicht, weil sie den alten Kontinent lediglich in den 90ern für wenige Konzerte besucht hat oder vielleicht, weil die Europäer damals mit hartem, female-fronted Rock, sehr amerikanisch und beeinflußt von Blues und Funk, teilweise sogar mit Country-Anleihen, nicht so wirklich etwas anzufangen wußten. Vielleicht war es auch einfach nur Pech. Man wird es nie erfahren. Doch die Zeiten haben sich geändert, während SASS JORDAN immer die Gleiche geblieben ist. Eine starke Frau mit einer noch stärkeren Stimme, die nach wie vor die Bühnen rockt und Songs schreibt, erst 2011 gründete sie mit Brian Tichy die Band S.U.N. und 2012 erschien ihr bisher letztes Soloalbum mit dem Titel „From Dusk Till Dawn“

'Small Source of Comfort' ist Cockburns 31. Album und eine, von seinen neuesten Abenteuern inspirierte, Sammlung von Liedern über Romantik, Protest und spiritueller Entdeckung. Das Album, vornehmlich akustisch und gleichzeitig rhythmisch, ist reich an Cockburns charakteristischer Mischung aus Folk, Blues, Jazz und Rock. Er sammelte, für ihn typisch, detailliert seine Beobachtungen über die Erlebnisse mit und über die Menschen, die er während seiner Besuche in San Franzisco, Brooklyn und bei den kanadischen Streitkräften in Kandahar (Afghanistan) getroffen hat. Die aus Brooklyn stammende Violinistin Jenny Scheinman, bekannt durch ihre Arbeit mit Bill Frisell und Norah Jones, ist eine von zwei weiblichen Musikern, die Cockburn auf dem aktuellen Album unterstützen und liefert die ergreifende Instrumental-Begleitung zu Liedern wie 'Lois on the Autobahn' und dem bluesig-zigeunerhaften Swing 'Comets of Kandahar', den Track, den Cockburn mit 'Django trifft John Lee Hooker' beschreibt. BLUE HIGHWAYS pays tribute to some of the singer/guitarist's longtime blues idols including Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Freddie King, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Peter Green, Robert Johnson and William Bell to name a few. After wrapping up his HEARTS ON FIRE tour in the Spring of 2015, Colin loved playing with his touring band and was really happy with the sound they had created on stage. What better time to make a record? Especially the record he had been itching to make for years - a collection of some of his favorite blues tracks. In less than a week, Colin and his band went into The Warehouse Studios in Vancouver and in only two days, BLUE HIGHWAYS was born.

Two time Juno award winner Jenny Whiteley is due back in Canada after a year of living in France, and sporting a brand new recording. 'The Original Jenny Whiteley' takes a traditional route in a nod to Jenny's musical pedigree and her father's and uncle's well-known band from the 70s, 'The Original Sloth Band.'The recording was made at H. Chris Brown's Wolfe Island Ontario's 'The Post Office' studio with Jenny's pals and musical comrades Sam Allison and Teillard Frost: aka Sheesham and Lotus. The three musicians spent some long days together in Brown's down home recording space and simply played until they got a performance they liked.
'It was the most natural, organic, live recording I've been part of ', Whiteley says. 'The boys were full of ideas and great energy...we just picked and sang into the wee hours until we got it right.' The songs on 'The Original Jenny Whiteley' range from bluegrass (Whiteley is a founding member of Toronto's High Lonesome Wednesdays with her band Heartbreak Hill), jug band music (through the 80s and 90s, Jenny and brother Dan were part of Junior Jug Band, a family band with dad, Chris, and uncle Ken), to old time and early jazz (the soundtrack to Whiteley's childhood). There are a fistful of new original songs here, too! Along with vocals and guitar, the songs included here feature jug, banjo, harmonica, fiddle, bones, jaw harp and some pretty unbelievable whistling! From the opening hit of professional reality in Chris Coole's '$100' referencing the working musician's lot, to the a cappella Georgia Sea Islands inspired 'Things Are Coming My Way', featuring Chris and Ken Whiteley, this record is full of surprises (comme une chanson en francais) and a gem of a collection.

Her exploration of Afro-Cuban melodies expresses the universality of music and her ability to embrace and showcase the rhythms and culture of Cuba has been groundbreaking.
Jane Bunnett’s accolades are numerous, including: multiple JUNO Awards, the Order of Canada, The Queens Diamond Jubilee medal, Ontario’s Premiers Award of Excellence as well as being nominated for a GRAMMY Award.
